Male vs. Female Goldendoodles: Is One Really Better?

If you’re looking for a Goldendoodle puppy, one of the first questions you may ask is: “Should we get a boy or a girl?”

The short answer? Neither is automatically better.

While there are some general differences between male and female dogs, sex is only one small piece of the puzzle. At Sunny Doodles, we put much more emphasis on temperament, energy level, confidence, and how a puppy fits into your family.

Male Goldendoodles

Male Goldendoodles are often described as playful, affectionate, and goofy. Many tend to keep that puppy-like personality for a long time. They love you vs a girl wants to be loved.

They can be wonderful choices for families looking for a fun, outgoing companion who loves being involved in everything.

But remember—not every male puppy will have the same personality.

Female Goldendoodles

Female Goldendoodles are often described as attentive, independent, and affectionate. Some mature a little differently than males and may be more focused on their people.

Again, these are tendencies—not guarantees.

You can absolutely have a goofy, cuddly female or a calm, sensitive male. A girl wants you to love her where a male dog wants to love you.

So Which Should You Choose?

Instead of asking:

“Boy or girl?”

We encourage families to ask:

“Which puppy fits our lifestyle?”

If you have young children, an active household, or want a calm companion, those factors may be much more important than whether the puppy is male or female.

A puppy’s individual temperament can tell you far more.

What We Look For at Sunny Doodles

As puppies grow, we watch how they interact with people, new experiences, littermates, handling, and their environment.

We’re looking at things like:

  • Confidence

  • Energy level

  • Sociability

  • Recovery from new experiences

  • Affection

  • Independence

  • Engagement with people

Our goal isn’t to find the puppy that is simply the cutest—or the puppy everyone wants.

It’s to help each family find the puppy that fits their life.

The Bottom Line

There is no universally better choice between a male and female Goldendoodle.

The best puppy is the one whose personality and needs match your family.

And sometimes, you walk into a puppy area expecting to choose a girl…

…and leave completely in love with a boy. 🤎
