Doodle puppies typically go through a significant transformation as they mature, which includes the shedding of their puppy coat. This process can happen up to two times before they reach adulthood and is essential for their development. Here’s a more detailed explanation of what to expect:
Understanding the Shedding Process in Doodle Puppies:
1. **Puppy Coat Development**: Doodle puppies are born with a soft, fluffy puppy coat that is often different from their adult coat. This initial coat is usually transient and serves as a temporary layer while their adult fur begins to develop.
2. **Blowing the Coat**: The term "blowing the coat" refers to the shedding of this puppy fur. As Doodles grow, they will typically blow their coat twice:
- The first time usually occurs around 4-6 months of age.
- The second blow can happen between 10-14 months, depending on the individual dog and the specific breed mix.
3. **Variability in Shedding**: Even fully furnished Doodles (those with a well-developed coat) can shed during this process. While Doodles are known for having low-shedding coats, they may still experience some shedding, especially during these transitional phases. This can be surprising to new Doodle owners who expect minimal shedding. THIS PROCESS IS NORMAL!!!
4. **Normal and Natural Process**: Shedding during these stages is completely normal and should be expected. It’s a natural part of their growth, as the puppy coat gives way to the more adult-like coat that will better suit their needs as they mature.
5. **Grooming Needs**: To manage shedding during this time, regular grooming is essential. Brushing your Doodle frequently helps remove loose hair and minimizes the mess around the house. It also promotes healthy skin and coat by distributing natural oils.
6. **Signs of Healthy Development**: Monitoring your Doodle’s coat changes can also give you insight into their overall health. A healthy coat that sheds in a normal pattern is a good indicator that your puppy is growing as expected.
7. **Consulting a Professional**: If you notice excessive shedding or any other concerning changes in your Doodle's coat or skin, consulting a veterinarian or a professional groomer can provide insights and ensure there are no underlying health issues. Typically doodles that are furnished will have some variation of blowing their coat. Its usually slightly noticable but also can very easily be missed because of how minimally it can present also. Usually you have to look for it. So if any extreme coat chages occur please call your vet! Doodles that have 1 furnishing copy you will notice blowing a liitle more. If you have adopted your doodle from a reputable breeder you shouldnt have to worry about a doodle that has a improper coat. Improper coats will heavily shed.
